About Big Jim’s Cattle Service

A Legacy of Excellence in Livestock Care and Equipment

Big Jim’s Cattle Service began in 1989 with a focus on hoof trimming for beef cattle. What started as a personal preference for trimming cattle’s hooves "my way" evolved into a growing statewide business, expanding beyond just trimming to include a range of services and equipment solutions for livestock producers.

My Story

Jim’s passion for livestock began in the 1960s and 70s when he was a 4-H member raising and showing Hereford beef cattle in Sonoma County. This led to further education in animal science at Santa Rosa Junior College and involvement on their livestock judging team. Throughout his career, Jim worked for both commercial and purebred beef cattle operations while holding a full-time job with the City of Sacramento. In 1991, Jim joined forces with his lifelong friend, Mel Hansen, and his son, Darrell, to create HAVE Angus, furthering his dedication to raising, showing, and selling top-quality Angus beef cattle.

In the years that followed, Big Jim’s Cattle Service grew significantly, trimming feet on many local, state, and national champions. Jim has been fortunate enough to travel to various junior livestock events, jackpots, and club projects, building lasting relationships with youth, leaders, and their families.

The Expansion into Livestock Equipment

In the mid-1990s, Jim’s relationship with Gene Herrmann, an independent sales rep for WW Livestock Systems, opened new doors for growth. After Gene’s promotion to Western US Sales Representative, Jim’s business expanded, and together, they worked on numerous beef and equine projects. As an Official WW Livestock Systems Dealer, Big Jim’s Cattle Service has become known for offering high-quality livestock handling equipment - systems that are durable, efficient, and built to last. WW’s commitment to excellence since 1946 has been a key factor in Jim’s continued success in providing equipment solutions for ranchers and producers.

Services and Custom Solutions

With a deep understanding of the livestock industry, Jim has helped design custom layouts and setups for all types of livestock and equine operations. From scales for 4-H chapters to designing livestock pens for FFA school farms and even creating large-scale systems for multi-million-dollar rodeo arenas, Big Jim’s Cattle Service is equipped to handle projects of all sizes. Whether you need assistance with equipment installation, pen layout, or ongoing service, Jim ensures that you get the best service from start to finish.

Commitment to the Industry

In 2008, Jim retired from the City of Sacramento to focus full-time on his business, expanding both his WW dealership and his seedstock Angus herd. Over the years, Jim and his family have exhibited and sold cattle at local, state, and national levels, with his daughter proudly showing Angus and Sim-Angus cattle.

Jim’s involvement in various youth, beef, and agricultural organizations has allowed him to stay connected to the agricultural community and continually learn and grow in his field. The relationships he’s built with livestock producers and enthusiasts, both near and far, have allowed Big Jim’s Cattle Service to remain a trusted name in the industry.
